February, 2010
Lake Charles, Louisiana

I spent the middle part of February in Lake Charles, Louisiana covering Mardi Gras events for my new website All About Mardi Gras.

Lake Charles is a terrific Gulf Coast community, with a rich, longstanding Mardi Gras tradition. Lake Charles Mardi Gras krewes are most well known for the size, quantity, and quality of their Mardi Gras costumes. In fact it's such an important symbol of the community that the Mardi Gras Museum in Lake Charles has acquired the largest collection of Mardi Gras regalia in the U.S. It's an incredible collection and worthy of a trip to Lake Charles in and of itself.

But when you're in Lake Charles you should also check out the boudin (a rice and pork-based Cajun sausage). This mild to spicy sausage is so loved in the area that they've created the "Boudin Trail", a Southwest Louisiana driving tour that highlights various local and regional boudin vendors.

To read stories about Lake Charles and Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana, visit All About Mardi Gras by clicking here.

Late January thru Early February 2010
St. Louis, Missouri

This winter I spent a good deal of time in St, Louis covering Mardi Gras events for my new website All About Mardi Gras.

On January 30th I attended the Crystal Cajun Cook-Off, a cooking contest in which ten amateur chefs and ten professional chefs compete in separate divisions for the honor of having their recipe chosen as the best Cajun/Creole dish.

I went back to St. Louis a week later to cover the Taste of Soulard restaurant open house. During this event many Soulard neighborhood restaurants accept tickets from a pre-purchased ticket booklet in exchange for drinks and/or samples of their signature Cajun/Creole fare.

That same weekend I covered St. Louis' Krewe of Barkus Pet Parade, and the Wiener Dog Derby. This entire day is dedicated to fun with furry friends.  Around midday a parade with thousands of local dogs and their owners makes its way through St. Louis' Soulard neighborhood.  At the end of the parade route sits a tiny little racetrack.

And over the next two hours dozens of dachshunds race for the chance to be crowned fastest in their age group (cocktail wienies, ballpark franks, and hot dogs).

To read stories about these events, visit All About Mardi Gras by clicking here.

September 29, 2008
Northern New Mexico

I just returned from a fantastic trip to New Mexico that included stops in Santa Fe, Bandelier National Monument, Los Alamos, Abiquiu (and the Georgia O'keefe House), Ghost Ranch, Chama (to ride the Combres & Toltec Scenic Railroad), Red River, and the newly opened Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino.

I was also lucky enough to visit Tierra Wools in Los Ojos for a demonstration of spinning and weaving by masters of the craft, and spent some time with a brother and sister team of potters on the San Ildefanso Pueblo. Their work is exquisite, and I believe my camera captured some of the subtleties of their craft. But I'll let you be the judge of that.

I'll upload a sample gallery of images from this trip as soon as possible. If you'd like to see more, or have specific requests, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

May 23, 2008
The Netherlands

I've just returned from a fabulous trip to the Netherlands. I am full of stories and anxious to get started writing.

The focus of my trip was not so much on Amsterdam, The Hague, and Rotterdam, though I was centrally located in Amsterdam and can offer a few travel tips there as well. My research focused on day trips and little-known secret finds around Amsterdam. Some of these include:

1. Enkhuizen and the Zuiderzeemuseum: An outdoor museum depicting life in a traditional North Sea fishing village during the reign of the Dutch East India Company's. Take a charming stroll through a town that has changed little in hundreds of years. Narrow brick streets lead from canal side cafes to small seaside houses and churches dating back to the 1400s.

2. Arnhem: The site of a pivotal WWII battle and, more importantly, home to a bakery known far and wide for making Roald Dahl's favorite cookie (finding the bakery was a sort of vision quest for my wife and I).

3. Edam: A typical quaint Dutch village with winding brick streets and narrow canal houses. Visit the cheese market in July and August and witness traders bringing their products to town by canal boat, and then carrying them to the market on wooden sleds. Or visit one of the town's many cheese shops and bakeries at any time of the year. Enjoy coffee and pastry sitting outside at a canal side cafe.

4. Otterlo and Hogue Veluwe National Park: The perfect natural setting to take a classic Dutch bike ride, enjoy a picnic, or explore the works of Van Gogh in the park's Kroller Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of the artist's work.

5. Utrecht: A small traditional Dutch city and home to the Centraal Museum, housed in a mysterious and fascinating building that once served as a monastery.

6. The Keukenhof Gardens: In bloom and open to the public only two months of the year (late March to mid May), this garden is the undisputed showpiece of Holland's tulip gardens. With millions of bulbs cultivated and removed annually, every visit to the gardens is unique. You can also take a canal boat tour through the tulip fields outside the formal gardens. This "bulb's eye view" trip gets you up close and personal with the latest and greatest in tulip breeding and the freshest and most vibrant flowers.

August 1, 2007
Seoul, South Korea & Beijing, PRC

I've just returned from three weeks in Asia where I had a marvelous trip to Seoul, and look forward to going back at a later date to explore the remainder of South Korea.

In Beijing, I had 4-5 wonderful days, and spent the rest of the time in a hospital after having my appendix removed. Much thanks to the Beijing Shangri-La Hotel I found my way to a terrific hospital (Beijing United Family in Chaoyang), and was well cared for. Needless to say, this will make for a very different type of travel story. I'm also planning on investigating the rising trend in medical tourism.
